If you think about the way that stories linger in our minds, it's generally a telling detail or two on which the memories turn (obviously, this is even truer when a piece relies on a single image or idea). And those telling details come from diligent and systematic investigation into the subject matter from which the story is woven.

For us, the research phase generally overlaps with planning, on the one hand, and continues throughout the design process.
